The first set of Ryder Cup Pairings has been released:
Day 1 – Morning – Foursomes
Jon Rahm / Tyrell Hatton vs. Scottie Scheffler / Sam Burns – I nailed the Scheffler/Burns pairing so I feel good about that. I didn’t expect Rahm to play with Hatton, but it makes sense and I could see this team playing very well together. Rahm is one of the best players in the world and they both really love this format. I worry a bit about the Scheffler/Burns pairing early on so I would lean pretty hard to the Rahm/Hatton side here.
Victor Hovland / Ludvig Aberg vs. Max Homa / Brian Harman – I nailed both of these pairings as well! Hovland and Aberg could be really tough to beat, but the Americans won’t go down without a fight. I would expect to maybe get some value here on Hovland and Aberg if they are slight favorites or underdogs.
Shane Lowry / Sepp Straka vs. Rickie Fowler / Collin Morikawa – Ugh, I don’t love my Fowler not to score a point bet any more. I didn’t expect the Morikawa pairing at all and honestly I don’t really understand it. I think this is a mistake by both teams. Lowry needs to play with someone who is going to energize him (I predicted Hatton). This match will be interesting to watch, but I expect both of these pairings to get split up before they go out again.
Rory McIlroy / Tommy Fleetwood vs. Xander Schauffele / Patrick Cantlay – Obviously the ultimate American duo will be anchoring it in the first round of the Ryder Cup. I really like this McIlroy/Fleetwood pairing too. I would think the Americans get a slight lean here, but it shouldn’t get too crazy.
Shocking omissions from the American side are Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth. I would expect Spieth and Thomas to go out in the afternoon. I hope this doesn’t mean Koepka is going to be paired with Wyndham Clark. It feels like the Lowry/Straka pairing to me. Brooks should be with someone with a lot of emotion.
On the European side I’m surprised not to see Justin Rose out there. The other omissions make sense to me. I would lean to the Europeans right now when it comes to winning the overall cup.
Friday Foursomes Betting Odds:
Rahm/Hatton +110 / -115
Scheffler/Burns +140 / +104
Tie +650
I think Rahm and Hatton will run away with this one. I’m betting them at +110 and -115
Hovland/Aberg -105 / -130
Homa/Harmon +150 / +122
Tie +650
I can’t bet the rookie at at minus price against a pairing I really like. But I also can’t have anything against Aberg. Since I wouldn’t be surprised if either team ran away with this one I don’t want to bet the tie. So I’m going to pass on all bets related to this match.
Lowry/Straka +155 / +122
Fowler/Morikawa -105 / -130
Tie +650
I don’t like either of these teams really. Fowler and Morikawa are the better players, but Lowry loves this format so much it is hard to bet against him. I’m going to take a flyer on Tie +650, why not.
McIlroy/Fleetwood +110 / -116
Cantlay/Schauffele +125 / +100
Tie +650
I can’t pass up Cantlay/Schauffele here, but I won’t go crazy since I don’t want to fade Rory McIlroy. I’ll bet the +100 to be safe as tempting as the +125 is.
